What is tip-to-tip blending?

This technique demonstrates one of the unique properties of Copic Markers, in that you cannot cross-contaminate the markers with themselves, so long as you always clean off your markers on a scrap piece of paper to remove any excess colour. Tip-to-tip blending is good for long, very skinny areas like flower stems where you wouldn’t have enough room to get a blend using one of the other techniques. It is also a useful technique to achieve custom colour blends. In tole painting this technique would be similar to “loading your brush”.

How do I do tip-to-tip blending?

Step 1: Use your light colour as your brush. Carefully add a bit of the dark colour to the tip. For example, B00 would be your brush and you would add B29 to the tip.

 

 You can also use this technique to blend colours from different colour families for example: Y02 with R29.

 

 Or favourite technique is using this to add “blush” to cheeks for example E51 and R20.

 

Step 2: Start from the dark side of your object and in one long stroke pull your brush across the shape. Your dark colour should gradually fade into your light colour. If you need to darken or add more colour, apply it in the same direction and the same manner.

Always remember to scribble off the darker colour onto some scrap paper to keep your light marker tips nice and clean.
